It is a poly-compound, keratinized lamina produced by specific cells. Below, it extends the hyponychium to which connective fibers bind between the end of the phalangeal bone to the skin.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1186&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The lamina has a latero-lateral curvature that is more pronounced in the toenail.[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=&#8221;image_grid&#8221; images=&#8221;1187,1188&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As the drawing of a nail unit cross-section shows, the stratum corneum component that lies between the epithelium of the nail bed and the lamina increases in the distal plate (B). Under normal conditions, this is evidenced by a decrease in pink coloration (transparency of blood vessels) between proximal and distal areas.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1189&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nail_physiology\"><\/span><strong>Nail physiology<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The nail lamina is a multilayered sheet of cuneiform cells that are tightly adhered to each other. The main functions of the laminae of the fingernails are to grasp small or elusive objects. Meanwhile, in the toenails, the lamina help to counteract and dissipate the pressure forces that occur when walking. <\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nail_growth\"><\/span><strong>Nail growth<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Fingernails grow by about three millimeters per month, meaning that it takes about six months for the lamina to be completely replaced.
