In the most severe cases, this condition can lead to <strong data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"390\">permanent hair loss<\/strong> and leave <strong data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"445\">dark patches or unsightly scars<\/strong> on the skin. It can affect any area of the body where hair grows, but it most commonly occurs on the<strong data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"530\"> face, scalp, chest, back, buttocks and legs<\/strong>. The condition can be localised or widespread, mild or severe, and presents as<strong data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"645\"> red spots, pustules or boils<\/strong>, often accompanied by itching or pain.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"734\">There are two main types of folliculitis:<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"769\">Superficial folliculitis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the most common and least severe form. It affects only the outermost layer of the hair follicle.<br \/>\nKey features: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"1009\">\n<p data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"1009\">It appears as small red spots or pustules (with a white or yellow head) at the base of the hairs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1066\">\n<p data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1066\">The skin may appear red or slightly swollen<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1067\" data-end=\"1142\">\n<p data-start=\"1069\" data-end=\"1142\">It may cause<strong data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1109\"> itching or a mild burning<\/strong> sensation, but rarely leaves scars<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1143\" data-end=\"1377\">\n<p data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1377\">It usually clears up on its own within a few days<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1377\"><strong data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1272\">Common examples<\/strong>: razor burn (particularly on the face, groin or legs), folliculitis caused by sweating after a workout<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1377\"><strong data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1408\">Deep folliculitis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1542\">This form affects the entire hair follicle and may also spread to the surrounding tissues.<br data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1511\">Key features:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1933\">\n<li data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1604\">\n<p data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1604\">It causes deeper lumps that are red and painful to the touch<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1605\" data-end=\"1679\">\n<p data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1679\">It can develop into <strong data-start=\"1623\" data-end=\"1647\">pus-filled abscesses<\/strong> that burst spontaneously<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1759\">\n<p data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1759\">It is more persistent and tends to leave <strong data-start=\"1719\" data-end=\"1757\">scars or hyperpigmented patches<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1760\" data-end=\"1933\">\n<p data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"1933\">It often requires specific medical treatment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"1933\"><strong data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"1836\">Common examples<\/strong>: furunculosis, scalp impetigo, immersion folliculitis (swimming pools with contaminated water)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"2192\">Generally speaking, milder cases tend to resolve spontaneously without complications. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In more severe cases, however, folliculitis may develop into<\/span> <b>furunculosis<\/b> (<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a condition in which a series of boils develop on the skin), leading to scarring or dark patches, or causing permanent damage to the hair follicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_folliculitis_the_causes\"><\/span><b>What causes folliculitis: the causes<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Folliculitis is caused by an <strong>infection of the hair follicles<\/strong> by bacteria, the most common of which is <strong><em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em><\/strong>. The infection is triggered by damage to the follicle caused by: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>rubbing (for example, when shaving or due to tight clothing)<\/li>\n<li>excessive sweating<\/li>\n<li>inflammatory conditions such as acne<\/li>\n<li>skin damage such as grazes and abrasions<\/li>\n<li>from the use of plasters, adhesive tape or plastic objects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clinical_presentation\"><\/span><b>Clinical presentation<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The infection usually presents as i<strong>nflammation around the opening of a hair follicle<\/strong>, often accompanied by the formation of a yellow-tipped spot (pustule).<\/p>\n<p>Folliculitis can be painful. The skin in the affected area may be red. <\/p>\n<p><strong>In cases of deep folliculitis<\/strong>, the infection starts deeper within the area surrounding the hair follicle and completely involves it, leading to the formation of <strong>swollen abscesses<\/strong> that may burst, releasing the pus inside them, and which are painful.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_treat_folliculitis\"><\/span><b>How to treat folliculitis<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"117\" data-end=\"483\">In most cases, <strong data-start=\"156\" data-end=\"180\">mild forms of folliculitis<\/strong> tend to clear up on their own within a few days, without the need for specific treatment. However, if the infection <strong data-start=\"310\" data-end=\"366\">persists, spreads or recurs frequently,<\/strong> it is essential to seek targeted treatment, depending on the <strong data-start=\"435\" data-end=\"482\">type and severity<\/strong> of the condition. <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"1206\">\n<li data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"685\">\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"685\"><strong data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"526\">Isolated, superficial folliculitis<\/strong>: this can be treated topically by applying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/dermasana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dermasana<\/a> with <strong>Aluminium Chloride<\/strong>, which helps to reduce inflammation and disinfect the area.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"899\">\n<p data-start=\"688\" data-end=\"899\"><strong data-start=\"688\" data-end=\"735\">Deep folliculitis or furunculous folliculitis<\/strong>: in such cases, a course of <strong data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"820\">oral antibiotics<\/strong>, prescribed by a doctor, is often necessary to effectively treat the bacterial infection.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"1206\">\n<p data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"1206\"><strong data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"930\">Recurrent folliculitis<\/strong>: preventive treatment is recommended, to be carried out in the evening, by <strong data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1060\">rubbing in an exfoliating lotion<\/strong> containing <strong data-start=\"1071\" data-end=\"1109\">glycolic acid and salicylic acid <\/strong>(such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/glicosal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glicosal<\/a>), to reduce the build-up of dead skin cells and prevent the blockage of hair follicles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1386\">It is <strong data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1246\">strongly advised not to squeeze spots<\/strong>, as this can make the inflammation worse, spread the infection and increase the risk of <strong data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1385\">permanent marks or scars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1388\" data-end=\"1761\">In cases of <strong data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1455\">widespread or particularly inflamed folliculitis<\/strong>, it is also advisable to <strong data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1553\">temporarily stop washing with water and traditional cleansers<\/strong>, as these may further irritate the skin. Alternatively, it is recommended to cleanse the affected area with a <strong data-start=\"1672\" data-end=\"1734\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dermaclub.it\/en\/topical-therapy\/potassium-permanganate-a-helping-hand-in-dermatology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potassium permanganate<\/a> solution<\/strong>, under medical supervision. <\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_folliculitis_contagious\"><\/span><b>Is folliculitis contagious?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Folliculitis is <strong data-start=\"146\" data-end=\"188\">not contagious<\/strong>. However, it is advisable not to share personal items (such as towels and razors) with others.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prevention_and_dermatological_tips\"><\/span><b>Prevention and dermatological tips<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]There is no specific preventive strategy for folliculitis, but it is important to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or made of rough fabrics<\/li>\n<li>Shave gently and apply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/dermasana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dermasana<\/a> with Aluminium Chloride afterwards<\/li>\n<li>avoid scratching itchy lesions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Every case of folliculitis can present differently: consult your dermatologist to find the best way to treat the condition.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;] Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles that can range from mild to severe.
