Its causes are not yet fully understood, but it is believed to be caused by an instability in the skin barrier, exacerbated by genetic predisposition, stress and environmental factors.

People with seborrhoeic dermatitis often find themselves dealing with a recurring and troublesome condition, which can worsen if treated incorrectly or with overly aggressive treatments. In this article, we will look at why the use of cortisone and antifungals is not a permanent solution, and what the most effective and safest remedies are for managing seborrhoeic dermatitis in the long term, without damaging the skin.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]

Indice

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Cortisone Cream: Is It Really the Definitive Treatment?

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Antifungal treatments: what you need to know

Natural Remedies and Products for Seborrhoeic Dermatitis: treatments recommended by DermaClub

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Cortisone Cream: Is It Really the Definitive Treatment?

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]

Cortisone is often prescribed in the form of creams or lotions for the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis, thanks to its ability to quickly reduce inflammation, itching and flaking. Indeed, when first applied, cortisone can seem like a ‘miracle’ solution: symptoms appear to subside within a short time and the skin immediately looks calmer.

However, this improvement is only temporary and can become a real problem in the long term. In fact, the continued use of cortisone:

Causes skin dependency: to achieve the same effect, you need to apply it more and more frequently and in increasing amounts.

Causes the ‘rebound’ effect: when treatment is stopped, there is almost always a worsening of the condition, often more severe than in the initial phase.

Damages the skin: prolonged use can lead to skin thinning (atrophy), dilation of the capillaries, abnormal hair growth in the treated area (hypertrichosis) and a weakened skin barrier.

For these reasons, cortisone creams should never be used to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis, either on the scalp or on other affected areas. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is, in fact, a chronic condition that requires gentle and safe treatments, not aggressive solutions that make the problem worse over time.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Antifungal treatments: what you need to know

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]

Another medication frequently prescribed for seborrhoeic dermatitis is an antifungal, particularly those in the imidazole class such as econazole, miconazole or ketoconazole. These active ingredients are used because, for many years, it was believed that seborrhoeic dermatitis was caused primarily by an overgrowth of yeasts of the genus Pityrosporum (now known as Malassezia), which are naturally present on the skin.

According to this ‘classical’ theory, eliminating the fungi would have meant tackling the problem at its root. However, the latest scientific evidence has put this idea into perspective: we now know that seborrhoeic dermatitis is not directly caused by Malassezia, but rather by an abnormal skin reaction (genetic predisposition, stress, environmental factors) which can encourage the proliferation of the yeast as a consequence, not as the primary cause.

For this reason, antifungal treatments are often only partially effective and provide only temporary relief: they may slightly reduce the fungal load and offer momentary relief, but they do not address the root cause of DS nor do they prevent relapses. In many cases, in fact, the symptoms tend to return as soon as treatment ends.

Consequently, there is now a tendency to favour more targeted and gentle treatments that act on the skin barrier and inflammation, rather than focusing solely on the antifungal effect.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]

Natural Remedies and Products for Seborrhoeic Dermatitis: treatments recommended by DermaClub

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Medication is not necessary to treat DS; in fact, it responds well to exposure to sunlight and the application of sulphur and salicylic acid.

The sun undoubtedly has an anti-SD effect and is beneficial for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, whereas UV lamps are often irritating and can make the condition worse.

Sulphur, when combined with salicylic acid, has a powerful anti-SD effect.

It is therefore advisable to use a petroleum-free cream containing colloidal sulphur and salicylic acid in its pure form and at a low concentration, to be applied once a day in small amounts and massaged in thoroughly.

For the face, DermaClub recommends 2S Cream: the treatment involves massaging the sulphur-salicylic cream, into the affected areas, in the evening.
Once the SD has gone into remission, use of 2s Cream can be suspended and resumed if the first signs of a relapse appear.

Recommended products for Seborrhoeic Dermatitis of the Scalp:

apply a small amount of 2S Cream once a week in the evening, massaging it in thoroughly, and wash your hair the following morning.

As a shampoo, we recommend a quick-rinse product containing sulphonated ichthyol as an anti-itch agent, such as Dermictiol Shampoo.

Washing should be done quickly, without rubbing the scalp with your fingers so as not to irritate it further, and drying should preferably be done using a cotton terry towel (no hairdryer).
