It presents as r<strong data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"729\">edness, itching, a burning sensation and the formation of fluid-filled blisters<\/strong>, which may burst when scratched, leaving sticky scabs on the skin. If scratching continues, the skin may develop <strong data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"919\">abrasions or secondary bacterial infections<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"1140\">This condition differs from <strong data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"994\">allergic contact dermatitis<\/strong>, although the symptoms may be very similar.<br data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1045\">The <strong data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1076\">main difference<\/strong> lies in the mechanism by which the skin reaction develops:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1717\">\n<li data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1432\">\n<p data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1432\">In irritant dermatitis, the inflammation is caused by direct damage to the skin resulting from aggressive substances, without the immune system being involved. It is the most common form of contact dermatitis and can occur even after brief, one-off exposure. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1717\">\n<p data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1717\">In allergic contact dermatitis, however, the skin reacts to specific substances (allergens) to which the individual has already developed a sensitivity. These substances may be of chemical or natural\/environmental origin. <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"624\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Irritating_chemicals\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"624\">Irritating chemicals<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"1298\">\n<li data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"805\">\n<p data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"805\"><strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"661\">Harsh detergents and soaps<\/strong><br data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"664\">Often found in household or personal care products, they can impair the skin\u2019s barrier function and trigger dermatitis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"964\">\n<p data-start=\"809\" data-end=\"964\"><strong data-start=\"809\" data-end=\"838\">Acidic or alkaline substances<\/strong><br data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"841\">Such as bleach, ammonia, industrial acids or strong alkalis, these are highly irritating even after brief contact.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"966\" data-end=\"1109\">\n<p data-start=\"968\" data-end=\"1109\"><strong data-start=\"968\" data-end=\"996\">Solvents and disinfectants<\/strong><br data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"999\">Alcohol, acetone and other chemical solvents penetrate the skin quickly, causing dryness and irritation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1111\" data-end=\"1298\">\n<p data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1298\"><strong data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1164\">Industrial and household cleaning products<\/strong><br data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1167\">These include degreasers, concentrated detergents and bleaches: prolonged use or use without protective equipment can cause visible skin damage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1342\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Natural_and_environmental_substances\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1342\">Natural and environmental substances<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"1343\" data-end=\"2063\">\n<li data-start=\"1343\" data-end=\"1509\">\n<p data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1509\">Stinging or irritating plants<br data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1380\">Some plants, such as nettles, primroses, figs and euphorbias, release substances that cause redness, itching and blisters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1694\">\n<p data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1694\"><strong data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1554\">Sand, dust or other physical agents<\/strong><br data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1557\">Prolonged contact or rubbing of the skin against abrasive materials can cause micro-abrasions and trigger an inflammatory reaction.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1872\">\n<p data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1872\"><strong data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1735\">Adverse weather conditions<\/strong><br data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1738\">Bitter cold, wind and damp can weaken the skin\u2019s barrier, making it more vulnerable to irritants.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"2063\">\n<p data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"2063\"><strong data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"1925\">Excessive use of gloves or occlusive materials<\/strong><br data-start=\"1925\" data-end=\"1928\">Prolonged use of latex, rubber or plastic gloves can create a damp, occlusive environment, which can lead to the development of dermatitis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms\"><\/span><b>Symptoms<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Irritant contact dermatitis usually presents as a <strong>sudden skin rash<\/strong> characterised by red patches, blisters, flaking, erosions and scabs.<br \/>\nThe rash causes a sensation of itching or heat\/burning of varying intensity, prompting the person to scratch persistently.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis\"><\/span><b>Diagnosis<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]A <strong>dermatologic examination<\/strong> is generally sufficient to diagnose irritant contact dermatitis on areas of the body that are exposed to the outdoors (the hands, neck and face). If there is doubt on the diagnosis,<strong> epicutaneous allergy tests or patch tests<\/strong> can be performed.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_irritant_contact_dermatitis_be_treated\"><\/span><b>How can irritant contact dermatitis be treated? <\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"257\" data-end=\"536\">The treatment of irritant contact dermatitis varies depending on the severity of the skin rash and the individual\u2019s response to topical treatments. Generally, the aim is to reduce inflammation, protect the skin and prevent the rash from worsening. <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"1362\">\n<li data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"807\">\n<p data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"807\"><strong data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"561\">In mild cases<\/strong>, the dermatologist may recommend applying a <strong>soothing product containing zinc oxide and magnesium silicate<\/strong> (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/soothing-cream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soothing Cream<\/a>), two active ingredients with <strong data-start=\"714\" data-end=\"751\">protective, absorbent and soothing properties<\/strong>, which help to reduce redness, itching and irritation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"809\" data-end=\"1084\">\n<p data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"1084\"><strong data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"870\">In cases of more severe inflammation or weeping lesions<\/strong>, reparative ointments such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/peg-balm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PEG Ointment<\/a> may be used; this water-free formulation is particularly suitable for promoting the <strong data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1023\">restoration of the skin barrier<\/strong> in dry environments, thereby preventing skin maceration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1362\">\n<p data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1362\"><strong data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1175\">Where there is persistent itching or a more pronounced inflammatory response<\/strong>, it may be helpful to apply a <strong data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1254\">natural soothing agent such as sulphonated ichthyo<\/strong>l (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/dermictiol-cream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em data-start=\"1260\" data-end=\"1278\">Dermictiol Cream<\/em><\/a>), which is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-itching properties.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1631\">In all cases, it is essential to <strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1434\">avoid getting the affected areas wet<\/strong>, as moisture can <strong data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1487\">exacerbate inflammation<\/strong>, soften the skin and encourage bacterial growth. Frequent washing and the use of harsh cleansers should also be avoided. <\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prevention_tips_for_irritant_dermatitis\"><\/span><b>Prevention tips for irritant dermatitis<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"574\">The best way to prevent irritant contact dermatitis is to<strong data-start=\"390\" data-end=\"449\"> avoid or reduce exposure to irritants<\/strong> and to look after your skin by adopting good skincare habits. Here are some g<strong data-start=\"527\" data-end=\"573\">ood practices to follow every day<\/strong>: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"2294\">\n<li data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"876\">\n<p data-start=\"578\" data-end=\"876\"><strong data-start=\"578\" data-end=\"609\">Wear protective gloves<\/strong><br data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"612\">Use<strong data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"655\"> nitrile or vinyl gloves<\/strong> (preferable to latex) when handling chemicals or carrying out household chores, gardening or cleaning. If you wear gloves for long periods, it is best to change them frequently to avoid damaging your skin with sweat. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"1116\">\n<p data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"1116\"><strong data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"934\">Avoid direct contact with irritants<\/strong><br data-start=\"934\" data-end=\"937\">Take care with products containing harsh <strong data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"1062\">detergents, solvents, acids, dyes, glues or disinfectants<\/strong>, even if they are commonly used. Always read the labels. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1292\">\n<p data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1292\"><strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1154\">Use mild cleansers<\/strong><br data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1157\">Opt for non-foaming cleansers such as <strong>Eudermic Cleansing Base<\/strong> to minimise irritation to the skin barrier.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1531\" data-end=\"1722\">\n<p data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1722\"><strong data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1578\">Avoid washing too frequently or for too long<\/strong><br data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1581\">Avoid washing too often or using very hot water.
