When it affects the head, it can cause p<strong data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"650\">ersistent dandruff, scabs, intense itching, redness and flaking<\/strong> that may be more or less visible. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"972\">Often mistaken for ordinary dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis actually has a more complex cause, linked to <strong data-start=\"766\" data-end=\"786\">genetic factors<\/strong> <span data-start=\"766\" data-end=\"786\">and<\/span> <strong data-start=\"788\" data-end=\"798\">stress<\/strong>. It presents with <strong data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"466\">persistent flaking (dandruff)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"479\">itching<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"498\">redness<\/strong>, sometimes accompanied by <strong data-start=\"525\" data-end=\"547\">yellowish patches<\/strong> adhering to the skin. The appearance of visible dandruff on the hair or clothing is often one of the first recognisable signs.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"674\" data-end=\"803\">In the most severe cases, the <strong data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"733\">itching can be very intense<\/strong> and cause the person to scratch frequently, with the risk of:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"1098\">\n<li data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"850\">\n<p data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"850\"><strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"829\">Wounds and abrasions<\/strong> of the scalp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"930\">\n<p data-start=\"853\" data-end=\"930\"><strong data-start=\"853\" data-end=\"891\">Temporary hair thinning<\/strong> caused by trauma from scratching;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"1098\">\n<p data-start=\"933\" data-end=\"1098\"><strong data-start=\"933\" data-end=\"961\">Local skin infections<\/strong>, which can cause pain and <strong data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1032\">swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck<\/strong>, may in some cases require treatment with antibiotics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1425\">In some people, the dermatitis affects <strong data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1173\">the entire scalp<\/strong> and stops abruptly at the hairline. In other cases, <strong data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1278\">it extends beyond this<\/strong>, also affecting the <strong data-start=\"1302\" data-end=\"1312\">forehead<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1341\">area behind the ears<\/strong>, making it even more noticeable and troublesome from both an aesthetic and social perspective. <\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2692&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2693&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_triggers_seborrhoeic_dermatitis_on_the_scalp_the_causes\"><\/span><strong>What triggers seborrhoeic dermatitis on the scalp: the causes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of <\/span><b>theories circulating about the causes of SD, but they have little scientific basis<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but can have a significant psychological impact on those affected by the condition. These include the fungal theory and the intestinal theory: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <b>fungal theory<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests that seborrhoeic dermatitis is caused by the proliferation of the yeast Malassezia furfur, but it is more likely that the yeast proliferates as a result of the condition rather than being its cause.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <b>gut theory<\/b>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which posits that gut dysbiosis and sensitivity to certain foods necessitate special diets, is even less supported by scientific evidence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp is<\/span> <b>a genetically determined and stress-induced abnormality in the growth of the epidermis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Psoriasis_dandruff_or_seborrhoeic_dermatitis_how_to_tell_them_apart\"><\/span><strong>Psoriasis, dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis: how to tell them apart<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<a href=\"https:\/\/dermaclub.it\/en\/dermatology-fact-sheets\/dandruff-a-mini-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dandruff<\/a>, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp <a href=\"https:\/\/dermaclub.it\/en\/skin-diseases\/psoriasis-practical-recommendations-from-dermaclub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psoriasis<\/a> are different conditions but are often confused with one another, mainly because they present with similar symptoms: flaking, itching and redness. And that\u2019s where the trouble starts. The supermarket and pharmacy\/drugstore market is awash with anti-dandruff and anti-seborrhoeic shampoos.   <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which one should you choose, and how? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shampoo_for_seborrhoeic_dermatitis_friend_or_foe\"><\/span><strong>Shampoo for seborrhoeic dermatitis: friend or foe?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Shampoo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a cosmetic product designed to wash and cleanse the hair of grease and dirt quickly, without weighing it down or damaging it. A shampoo is formulated with surfactants (cleansing agents) and water, along with other additional ingredients.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Surfactants<\/b><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span> <b>the cleansing agents, but they can also irritate the skin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, due to their chemical composition, virtually all surfactants are poorly tolerated by the skin. For example, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which is by far the most widely used surfactant in shampoos, is considered a primary skin irritant and is used in experimental dermatology as an irritant inducer to study the effects of anti-inflammatory agents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other surfactants should also be regarded as irritants, so the first rule for those suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis<\/span> is <b>not to rub the shampoo into the scalp<\/b> with your fingers, <b>in order to avoid irritation and a worsening of the condition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, however, the exact opposite happens: people with seborrhoeic dermatitis on the scalp tend to rub the shampoo in for a long time, thinking that prolonged massage will help remove the hated flakes and scabs, but this actually has the opposite effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Medicated_shampoo_for_seborrhoeic_dermatitis_helpful_or_harmful\"><\/span><b>Medicated shampoo for seborrhoeic dermatitis: helpful or harmful?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many years now, shampoos have been available on the market that contain medicinal substances or active ingredients designed to target the (alleged) causes of SD. These products are known as  <\/span><b>Medicated Shampoo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicated shampoo is therefore seen as a treatment for seborrhoeic dermatitis and, as such, is massaged or rubbed into the scalp or even left to work for several minutes. The conclusion is that  <\/span><b>the shampoo\u2019s inflammatory effect <\/b>\u2013 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is, its surfactant action \u2013 outweighs the \u2018curative\u2019 effect of the active ingredients it contains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This<\/span> explains the major disappointments and the constant trialling of new shampoos that is typical of people with SD<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cortisone_damage_and_dependency\"><\/span><strong>Cortisone: damage and dependency<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disappointed by medicated shampoos \u2013 which are expensive and ineffective \u2013 many people resort to the quick fix of using cortisone in its various commercial forms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, the response to SD is almost immediate. The itching and flaking disappear. Unfortunately,   <\/span><b>once the cortisone is stopped,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  <\/span>the condition often appears more severe than it was before treatment. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, on the other hand, one continues to use cortisone, one risks developing<\/span> <b>cortisone tachyphylaxis<\/b> \u2013 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is, the need to use increasingly frequent applications to keep seborrhoeic dermatitis at bay. When you have dandruff and long hair, it is not easy to apply the cream through the hair and work it in by massaging the scalp. However, with a little patience, working in small, adjacent sections, you can apply it evenly. The sulphur-salicylic cream is applied in the evening and, if applied correctly, the hair does not feel weighed down, so there is no need to wash it the following day.
