The ulcer becomes colonised by many species of bacteria and yeasts, which are not the cause of the lesion but the consequence of the loss of skin integrity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Redness<\/b> develops a<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t the corners of the mouth, either on both sides or on one side only<\/span>, and is <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soon followed by the appearance of a crack<\/span> <b>or fissure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angular cheilitis, or mouth corner inflammation, can affect children, adults and the elderly alike, with a higher prevalence among women. The main symptoms are: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<li data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"457\">\n<p data-start=\"337\" data-end=\"457\"><strong data-start=\"337\" data-end=\"365\">Localised redness<\/strong><br data-start=\"365\" data-end=\"368\">The skin at the corners of the mouth appears red and irritated, on one or both sides.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"459\" data-end=\"605\">\n<p data-start=\"461\" data-end=\"605\"><strong data-start=\"461\" data-end=\"486\">Cracks (fissures)<\/strong><br data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"489\">Small cracks appear in the skin, which can deepen over time, particularly when opening the mouth.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"770\">\n<p data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"770\"><strong data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"644\">A burning sensation or pain<\/strong><br data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"647\">The discomfort worsens when moving the mouth (talking, eating, smiling) and on contact with acidic or salty foods.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"772\" data-end=\"900\">\n<p data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"900\"><strong data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"811\">Persistent moisture in the wound<\/strong><br data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"814\">The area often remains damp due to saliva, which promotes skin maceration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"1030\">\n<p data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"1030\"><strong data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"935\">Constant itching or discomfort<\/strong><br data-start=\"935\" data-end=\"938\">This can lead to repeated licking of the corners of the mouth, a behaviour that exacerbates the inflammation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<p data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1151\"><strong data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1064\">Scabs or flaking<\/strong><br data-start=\"1064\" data-end=\"1067\">In cases of long-standing lesions, small scabs or areas of thickened skin may appear.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatments_to_avoid\"><\/span><b>Treatments to avoid<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aetiology of angular cheilitis is often misunderstood. Some believe it is caused by yeast (Candida) simply because Candida yeast can sometimes be isolated from the sores. Candida is not the cause of the lesion but can sometimes contaminate it; and, as it is merely a contaminant, the angular cheilitis will not heal even if the Candida is eliminated. Therefore,    <\/span><b>treatments involving the use of antifungal agents<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, for others, the cause is bacterial because various types of bacteria are isolated; however, these are merely colonising the lesion and are not the cause of it. Therefore, even the use of  <\/span>topical or systemic <b>antibiotics<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not lead to recovery.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_angular_cheilitis_treated_Treatments_and_remedies\"><\/span><b>How is angular cheilitis treated? Treatments and remedies  <\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1397\">The treatment of angular cheilitis is based on two fundamental principles: <strong data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1321\">eliminating the causes of irritation <\/strong>and <strong data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1364\">restoring the skin\u2019s integrity<\/strong>. The main measures are: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"2372\">\n<li data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1607\">\n<p data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"1607\"><strong data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"1455\">Avoid keeping the corners of your mouth constantly damp<\/strong><br data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1458\">Do not lick the area; dry it thoroughly after drinking or brushing your teeth and, if necessary, use a straw to minimise contact with liquids.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<p data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1783\"><strong data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1642\">Minimise irritants<\/strong><br data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"1645\">Temporarily stop using lipsticks, lip balms, cosmetic creams and harsh toothpastes, as these can make skin maceration worse.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1996\">\n<p data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1996\"><strong data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1824\">Avoid inappropriate treatments<\/strong><br data-start=\"1824\" data-end=\"1827\">Antifungals and antibiotics are not recommended, as bacteria and yeasts are secondary colonisers and not the primary cause of the lesion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2165\">\n<p data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2165\"><strong data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2038\">Promoting skin healing<\/strong><br data-start=\"2038\" data-end=\"2041\">The aim is first to dry out the wound and then to stimulate skin regeneration using healing and protective products.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2372\">\n<p data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2372\"><strong data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2215\">Address any underlying factors<\/strong><br data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2218\">In children, check for atopic dermatitis; in adults, check for the use of cosmetics; in the elderly, check for any dental problems or poorly fitting dentures.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_cream_should_be_used_for_angular_cheilitis\"><\/span><b>What cream should be used for angular cheilitis? <\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2439\" data-end=\"2537\">The treatment of angular cheilitis should be g<strong data-start=\"2490\" data-end=\"2514\">radual and targeted<\/strong>, in two distinct stages:<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2608\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Initial_stage_reduction_of_moisture_and_microbial_load\"><\/span>1. Initial stage: reduction of moisture and microbial load<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2609\" data-end=\"2727\">During the acute phase, when the lesion is weeping, reddened and painful, the use of an <strong data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2722\">astringent<\/strong> product containing aluminium chloride is recommended, which:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2728\" data-end=\"2843\">\n<li data-start=\"2728\" data-end=\"2747\">\n<p data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2747\">dries the area,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2748\" data-end=\"2796\">\n<p data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2796\">reduces secondary microbial growth,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2797\" data-end=\"2843\">\n<p data-start=\"2799\" data-end=\"2843\">helps to reduce inflammation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2845\" data-end=\"2927\">This treatment should be applied <strong data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"2903\">morning and evening<\/strong> for around <strong data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"2926\">7 days<\/strong>.
