It is a <strong>usually benign condition<\/strong> characterized by <strong>rashes<\/strong> in the form of small blisters on the hands, feet and around the mouth, sometimes accompanied by fever and sore throat. The eruptions may also spread to the elbows, buttocks and knees. The disease is mainly caused by <strong>Coxsackie A16 and Enterovirus 71 viruses<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3160&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3844&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Triggers_of_Hand_Foot_and_Mouth_Disease\"><\/span><strong>Triggers of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]HFMD is mainly caused by the <strong>Coxsackie A virus<\/strong> and other <strong>enteroviruses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus is mainly transmitted through:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Direct contact<\/b>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via infected secretions such as saliva, mucus or faeces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indirect contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: via surfaces contaminated with the virus<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools and nurseries, where children are in close contact with one another, are common places where the disease spreads. The disease is more common and contagious during the summer and autumn months, when outbreaks are more frequent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"954\">Although generally benign, HFMD can be extremely <strong data-start=\"756\" data-end=\"813\">challenging in children with active atopic dermatitis<\/strong>, particularly if they <strong data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"869\">have recently been treated with corticosteroids<\/strong>, as their skin is more vulnerable to infection and skin complications.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1204\">In such cases, to <strong data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"1014\">soothe skin inflammation<\/strong>, it may be helpful to apply wet compresses soaked in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dermaclub.it\/en\/topical-therapy\/potassium-permanganate-a-helping-hand-in-dermatology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Potassium Permanganate solution,<\/a> which help to disinfect the skin, promote healing and reduce the risk of secondary infections.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3846&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Hand_Foot_and_Mouth_Disease_begins_the_symptoms\"><\/span><b>How Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease begins: the symptoms<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1203\">Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease has fairly distinctive early symptoms, but it can be mistaken for other viral infections in children. Here are the main signs: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"2072\">\n<li data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1322\">\n<p data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1322\"><strong data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1226\">Mild fever<\/strong><br data-start=\"1226\" data-end=\"1229\"\/>This is often the first symptom and may appear 1\u20132 days before the skin lesions develop.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1421\">\n<p data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1421\"><strong data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1348\">General malaise<\/strong><br data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1351\"\/>Fatigue, irritability and loss of appetite are common in the first few days.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1423\" data-end=\"1568\">\n<p data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1568\"><strong data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1465\">Sore throat and difficulty swallowing<\/strong><br data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1468\"\/>Painful sores may appear in the mouth (stomatitis), making it difficult to eat.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1570\" data-end=\"1718\">\n<p data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1718\"><strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1592\">Skin rashes<\/strong><br data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1595\"\/>Small blisters on the hands, feet and around the mouth; they may also spread to the elbows, buttocks and knees.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1720\" data-end=\"1845\">\n<p data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"1845\"><strong data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"1752\">Skin peeling and scabs<\/strong><br data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"1755\"\/>The blisters tend to burst, leaving small scabs that heal on their own.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1847\" data-end=\"2072\">\n<p data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"2072\"><strong data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"1883\">Possible complications (rare)<\/strong><br data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1886\"\/>In some cases, particularly in adults or immunocompromised children, persistent high fever, secondary infections or dehydration due to a lack of fluid intake may occur.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3848&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;3850&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Approaches_for_the_Management_of_Symptoms_of_Mani-Pedi-Bocca_Disease\"><\/span><strong>Practical Approaches for the Management of Symptoms of Mani-Pedi-Bocca Disease <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease, as<\/span><b> it tends to clear up on its own within a week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment is mainly supportive and aims to ensure the child\u2019s comfort. It is advisable to:  <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>temporarily stop washing<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the affected area and do not apply creams to the blisters, to avoid further irritating the skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">if the lesions become larger or particularly itchy and painful, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mostskincare.com\/en\/shop\/all-the-categories\/peg-balm\/\">PEG Ointment<\/a> can be applied morning and evening to aid healing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>in the event of stomatitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is important to avoid irritating foods and not to administer any medication, even if the child has a fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>staying well hydrated<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is essential, especially if the child is having difficulty eating due to mouth sores<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2129\" data-end=\"2291\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_see_a_doctor\"><\/span><strong>When to see a doctor<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2129\" data-end=\"2291\">Although hand, foot and mouth disease tends to clear up on its own within a few days, it is important to monitor the progression of symptoms closely.
