Congenital cases of anonychia are, however, rare and are most often accompanied by other developmental disorders. On the other hand, acquired anonychia can be the result of inflammatory diseases such as lichen or psoriasis.<br \/>\nAnonychia can be total or partial, depending on whether some or all laminae are missing.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1088&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1089&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chromonychia_lamina_color_change\"><\/span><b>Chromonychia: lamina color change<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The change in lamina colour can be of external origin, such as contact with oxidising substances.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example oxidation of the lamina by potassium permanganate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or from internal causes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also be the result of internal factors, with the main endogenous causes of chromonychia being disease or the use of certain drugs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When chromonychia is the result of disease, it is usually due to the absorption of toxic substances from within the work environment.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, when the cause is medication, it is often due to certain drugs such as antibiotics or chemotherapeutics that can cause nail discoloration.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leuconichia and melanonychia are considered separately among chromonychias.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1090&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leukonychia_white_marks_on_the_lamina\"><\/span><b>Leukonychia: white marks on the lamina<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The white marks characteristic of leukonychia may appear as dots, horizontal or vertical lines, or may turn the entire lamina white.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are both congenital forms of leukonychia and those caused either by disease or external factors.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common external cause is trauma induced by extreme pedicures or through the wear of unsuitable shoes.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below is an example of horizontal leukonychia striata (Mees\u2019 lines):<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1091&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leukonychia totalis<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1092&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]In addition to leukonychia, other noticeable color changes to the nail include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>blue nails, usually resulting from drugs such as tetracycline or chloroquine;<\/li>\n<li>green nails, usually resulting from a pseudomonas colonization;<\/li>\n<li>yellow nails, usually resulting from hyperthyroidism or medications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1106&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Melanonychia_black_staining_of_the_lamina\"><\/span><b>Melanonychia: black staining of the lamina<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]Black coloration of the nails can appear for many reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>from medication (e.g. chemotherapy)<\/li>\n<li>from disease (e.g. renal failure)<\/li>\n<li>from melanin (e.g. nevus, melanoma)<\/li>\n<li>from bleeding (e.g. trauma)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1093&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1094&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Onychodystrophy_nail_growth_disorder_due_to_nutrient_deficiency\"><\/span><b>Onychodystrophy: nail growth disorder due to nutrient deficiency<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Onychodystrophy is mainly caused by a lack of blood supply to the germinal matrix. It can also be linked to insufficiently oxygenated blood supply to the area, or a blood supply deficient in nutritional factors.<br \/>\nBlood flow is affected when blood vessels become occluded, for example as a result of trauma or because of diabetic\/atherosclerotic angiopathy. Another cause is when blood pressure drops due to cardiological problems or when the lungs fail to properly oxygenate the blood. In other cases, the blood supply is there, but it is nutritionally lacking. This can occur due to illnesses such as liver disease, or as a result of chemotherapy, malabsorption, or dietary deficiencies. In any case, the most frequent cause of onychodystrophy is senescence.<br \/>\nA summary of the other most common causes are:[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trauma<\/li>\n<li>Cardiovascular disease<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Respiratory failure<\/li>\n<li>Cirrhotic hepatopathy<\/li>\n<li>Chemotherapy<\/li>\n<li>Senescence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1096&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Onychogryphosis_rams_horn_nail\"><\/span><b>Onychogryphosis: ram\u2019s horn nail<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Onychogryphosis occurs when the nail plate thickens to the point the patient can no longer cut it, which causes it to continue growing until it begins to curve to take on the appearance of a claw.<br \/>\nOnychogryphosis usually prevents normal walking and must be corrected surgically.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Onychogryphosis is sometimes linked to onychodystrophy, but can appear independently due to altered neuronal stimuli to the germinal matrix.<br \/>\nIn other cases, onychogryphosis can be triggered by trauma obtained through sports such as tennis, volleyball and basketball.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1097&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pachyonychia_the_thickening_of_the_nail_plate\"><\/span><b>Pachyonychia: the thickening of the nail plate<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Pachyonychia causes the nail plate, and particularly that of the big toe, to thicken when the germinal matrix is hyperproliferative. This can occur in cases of psoriasis, or if the patient has nutritional deficiencies as can often occur in senescence.<br \/>\nA special case is pachyonychia post-avulsion of the lamina, whereby lamina avulsion causes the distal phalanx to tip upward.<br \/>\nAs the lamina grows, it bumps against the phalangeal soft parts and can no longer slide horizontally so it grows vertically creating pachyonychia.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>senile pachyonychia<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1099&#8243; img_size=&#8221;250&#215;188&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>psoriasis pachyonychia<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1105&#8243; img_size=&#8221;250&#215;188&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>post-avulsion pachyonychia<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1098&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Onycholysis_detachment_of_the_nail_plate_and_separation_of_the_lamellae\"><\/span><strong>Onycholysis: detachment of the nail plate and separation of the lamellae<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Onycholysis describes either when the lamina detaches from the nail bed, or when individual lamellae do not adhere to each other.<br \/>\nIt is the most characteristic sign of nail psoriasis.<br \/>\nIt may also occur from repeated trauma (sports, footwear, etc.) and sometimes as a side effect in the use of certain medications.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Psoriasis<\/li>\n<li>Trauma<\/li>\n<li>Medications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Onychocryptosis_ingrown_toenail\"><\/span><strong>Onychocryptosis: ingrown toenail<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]Onychocryptosis, commonly referred to as ingrown toenails, is one of the most common pathological occurrences and primarily affects the first toe.<br \/>\nIngrown toenails can often be accompanied by the reactive granulomas due to the irritation that the lamina causes to the dermis.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1108&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Paronychia_Inflammation_or_infection_of_the_perionichia\"><\/span><strong>Paronychia : Inflammation or infection of the perionichia<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Paronychia is the inflammation or infection of the tissues surrounding the nail.
