Needling: a regenerative dermatology technique
07/09/2023Horizontal needling is a new procedure aimed at reducing the depth of facial wrinkles or lines, and improving the appearance of stretch marks. As with all treatments offered by DermaClub, horizontal needling is a non-invasive mechanical stimulation technique that does not require any medication or injections.
As dermal and subdermal compartments lose thickness with age and sun exposure, lines begin to show more clearly on the face. These lines are created by the insertion of fibrils that bind the skin to the mimetic muscles. These fibrils, or ‘expression lines’, are not elastic and depress the skin, creating lines and wrinkles. The most evident ‘expression lines’ are horizontal frontal lines, vertical glabellar lines, radial eye contour lines, radial mouth contour lines, and linear/arcuate nasogenian lines, which are all conditioned by the presence of mimetic muscles beneath the skin. These muscles are naturally connected to the overlying skin so, when they contract, they pull down the skin. Naturally over time and/or through sun exposure damage, linear or radial wrinkles known as mimetic wrinkles form on the face, that remain evident even in the absence of facial expression.
Perioral wrinkles and corrugator wrinkles between the forehead and eyes are among the most difficult to treat. Fillers are often used, but they give only temporary results, while botox injections leave this area expressionless.
Horizontal Needling
Horizontal needling uses a micromotor, similar to those used in orthodontics, with a headpiece attached that oscillates back and forth.
A sterile needle used in dental anesthesia carpules is applied to the oscillating handpiece via a ring.
At this point, the execution speed is set between 8,000 and 12,000 cycles per minute, and the needle is inserted horizontally between the epidermis and dermis. The rapid oscillation facilitates the needle’s sliding along the entire wrinkle being treated. Thanks to the speed of the micromotor, this practice is completely painless, and does not create bruises or redness. After the treatment, the wrinkle appears softer and much less visible. To obtain maximum results, monthly treatment sessions are needed, but the number of sessions may vary depending on age and the depth of the wrinkles needing treatment. When radial or linear wrinkles are treated at their onset, the result is better, even after a single application.
